Hey Lancashire, don’t let a ‘washout’ ruin your Bank Holiday Weekend

  For most Lancastrians, the words Bank Holiday Weekend and ‘Washout’ have become an all too familiar sound over the last few years. So, it’s little surprise that this weekend is likely to be much of the same, albeit with a few bright spells to act as a glimmer of hope. Well, at least it’s consistent.

 

The weather may have already waterlogged your Bank Holiday plans, but never fear as we’ve got a bucket full of alternative ideas . . . Go on, have a butchers!

Head to the seaside . . .

With the forecast in mind, you’ll probably be thinking that this is the last place to visit. However, Blackpool, the Las Vegas of the North, is the perfect place to be this rainy bank holiday. Personal favourites are  certainly the Sea Life Centre and discovering the story behind the Pendle witches in the  Tower Dungeon.

 

Head underground . . .

If you’re north of the county and don’t want to risk the infamous Lake District weather, then Honister Slate Mine will be the perfect shelter from any storm. Oh, and with it being England’s last working slate mine, there’s over 900 years of history to explore.

 

Head to the tracks . . . 

Lancashire folk love steam, it’s in our blood. So, why not take a nostalgic trip down memory lane on one of the county’s famous and award winning railways. If you’re a real ale buff, the East Lancashire Railway are hosting their very own trail. We highly recommend that you grace the Irwell Works Brewery in Ramsbottom with your presence at some point.

 

Head into history . . .

If you’re feeling a bit daring, then head over the border to the quintessentially English market town of Skipton. Skipton Castle is an excellent place to spend the day, and, for this weekend, you can even meet and hear the tales of,  Sir John Mallory, the Governor of Skipton Castle during the English Civil War.

 

Nevertheless, if a trip to Yorkshire is something you usually try to avoid, then make sure you check out the fascinating First World War exhibition at the Imperial War Museum North.

 

Head to the blues . . .

Europe’s best Rhythm and Blues festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary this weekend. Oh, and it’s only in Colne! With four full days of live music across 7 separate stages, you’ll be jumping, jiving and dancing right through to next Tuesday.

 

Head to the water . . .

Forget the ice bucket challenge, if you do have your sights set on getting wet through this weekend, then head to Splash World in Southport. The indoor waterpark has a whole host of flumes, rapids and slides to enjoy!

 

Head to the canal . . .

Did you know Burnley is hosting its very own canal festival this weekend? Well, make sure you get along to it . . . visit the craft stalls, smell the food stalls and see the giant puppets on display. Obviously, there’s the chance to take a boat trip too!
